Crime Prevention Programs
The Decherd Police Department provides numerous services to the residents and business owners of the City of Decherd. We believe that through Community Oriented Policing and cooperation between Law Enforcement and the Public, Decherd can be an even safer place to live. Our Crime Prevention Programs assist the citizens and business owners largely through education and instruction. These programs are administered by a full time Patrolman, specializing and trained in Crime Prevention. He is assisted by other departmental personnel and Citizen Volunteers as needed. Decherd Citizens Academy- This instruction is offered at various times throughout the year. It consists of various topics related to both Law Enforcement and Crime Prevention.
D.A.R.E. Instruction- Drug Abuse Resistance Education is taught at the elementary school level in Decherd schools. This 10 week curriculum is taught at both Decherd Elementary School and Good Shepherd Catholic School.
Decherd Neighborhood Watch Program- Our Neighborhood Watch Program involves community meetings that mainly consist of an instructional/educational presentation, followed by an open discussion/interaction session with the public. Listed below are some of the topics presented during Neighborhood Watch meetings, but not limited to:

Business Watch Program- This program is designed to help local business owners and workers prevent theft, robbery, and burglary. It relies on interaction between business owners, workers, and law enforcement, all working together to deter and help prevent business related crimes.
Vacation House Checks-If you are planning a vacation or lengthy absence from your home, you can have your home checked by a patrolman periodically during your absence. A form must be completed that contains contact information in the event of an emergency.
Highway Watch Program-This program is administered by the Tennessee Trucking Association, in partnership with the Tennessee Office of Homeland Security. Its goal is to provide and ensure safer highways throughout the cities, states, and nation as a whole. A trained and certified Highway Watch Officer conducts this training at various times throughout the year. This program is not only focused on those in the trucking industry, but also school bus drivers and citizens who travel the highways as well.
Residential Security Assessments- This program is designed to help residents make their homes more secure against burglaries. An officer will conduct a survey of the home to identify weaknesses in the home’s security. The officer will assess various security elements, everything from locks, lighting design and landscaping, and then make recommendations on solving possible problems identified.
Child Identification Program- The Decherd Police Department provides, at various times throughout the year, opportunities for parents and guardians to obtain a Child Identification kit free of charge.
Residential Speed Enforcement Program- This program enables citizens to request traffic enforcement in a specific area where the citizen believes that there may be a problem. The request is passed on to the Patrol Division, which will in turn assign at least one unit to make a special patrol and/or conduct radar operations to help ensure speed compliance and general safety.
Child Safety Presentations-The Decherd Police Department conducts a Child Safety Program presentation for both children and adults. The topics range from abduction, child predators, child sex abuse, and abuse awareness.
Rape Prevention Presentations- The Decherd Police Department conducts Rape Prevention presentations at various times throughout the year. This program incorporates avoidance and defense strategies against attack, and then informs participants of the steps that should be taken should an attack occur.
